The atlas (C1) and axis (C2) are part of the spine’s craniovertebral junction (CVJ)—this is where the base of your brain becomes part of your spinal column. Working together, the atlas and axis are primarily responsible for spinal rotation, flexion (bend forward) and extension (bend backward). The first cervical vertebrae (C1) is known as the atlas. The second cervical vertebrae (C2) is known as the axis. In this article, we shall look at the anatomy of the cervical vertebrae – their characteristic features, articulations and clinical relevance.

Working together, the atlas and axis are primarily responsible for spinal rotation, flexion (bend forward) and extension (bend backward). The first cervical vertebrae (C1) is known as the atlas. The second cervical vertebrae (C2) is known as the axis.

Like most of the other vertebra, C2 has a vertebral body, pedicles, and lamina, allowing it to fit in the design of the spinal column. however, there is no disc between C1 and C2. Instead, there is a process, a peg of sorts, that protrudes upwardly out of the top part of the vertebral body of C2. This peg is known as the Dens or Odontoid.

C1 Vertebra (the atlas). The top vertebra, called the atlas, is the only cervical vertebra without a vertebral body. Instead, it is shaped more like a ring.

C1 c2 anatomy

From C2 to C1 it is known as the anterior atlantoaxial membrane, and from C1 to the anterior aspect of the foramen magnum as the anterior axial-occipital membrane. These are the only spinal ligaments that limit hyperextension of the vertebral column.

The C1 sits atop and rotates around C2 below. More of the head’s rotational range of motion comes from C1-C2 than any other cervical joint. 1 The atlas (C1) and axis (C2) are the two topmost vertebrae. The atlas (C1) is the topmost vertebra, and along with the axis forms the joint connecting the skull and spine. It lacks a vertebral body, spinous process, and discs either superior or inferior to it. It is ring-like and consists of an anterior arch, posterior arch, and two lateral masses.
